The 80/20 rule for training

The 80/20 rule in training is simple: about eighty percent of your work stays easy. About twenty percent goes hard. Easy means Zone 2: aerobic, repeatable, conversational. Hard means short, intentional, recovered for.

It is not a loophole to avoid work. It is how work compounds without cooking your nervous system.

What eighty percent easy looks like

Easy is not lazy. You still show up. Pace stays honest. You finish able to do it again tomorrow. That is daily output.

If every session leaves you destroyed, you do not have an eighty percent. You have a highlight reel and a recovery debt.

What twenty percent hard is for

Hard days teach speed, power, or race specific stress. They work when the base is thick. They fail when they are your whole personality.

Earn them. Space them. Then return to the quiet majority of Zone 2.

Why brands talk about 80/20

At Zone Two the split is a design brief. Apparel for the long middle of the week, not only the photo finish. Soft tech. Modern fits. Pieces you reach for when the plan says easy and you still want to look sharp.

Longevity over hype. Normalize slow when slow is the work.

Try this for four weeks

  • Count sessions, not vibes: roughly four easy for every hard
  • Keep easy truly easy (talk test)
  • Put hard on the calendar after sleep, not after ego
